What we’ve done this week…
We had such a great week, packed full of fun and exciting new things including an insect, spider & color theme, with stories, crafts, insect & spider science studies, fun crayon color word mini books, insect math & more!  We finished all the letters in the alphabet this week, learning their names & sounds, and now we are reviewing one letter a day.  These are still new to your child, especially the sounds they make.  Please practice with them, ask them the sound and motion a random letter makes.  I am assessing once again to get ready for our new “report cards” which are actually more like a progress report.  I am happy with improvement the students are showing, even in just a couple of weeks.  We will review this new progress report and the common core standards and what it all means at conferences.  Our reading story of the week that came home today is This Is, with the sight words this, it, and no.  This is a repetitive story for your child to read to you as they continue to watch words and patterns.  Students have been practicing writing their numbers with Mrs. Kerr at math, which is proving very beneficial in their writing and recognition.   If your child asks to write anything, encourage it!  The same goes for counting, have your child count the cans in the pantry, the shoes in a closet, and the spoons in the drawer!  Encourage this as they show interest!  They are curious, and learning quickly, and it is always so enjoyable watching how fast they grow intellectually!

Communication

As our year is well underway, (kindergarteners have been in class 30 days so far!), you may have concerns or questions.  Please feel free to contact me to schedule a meeting at any time.  I used to be able to be pulled aside at the end of the day as students were leaving, but this year that is just too difficult without having Mrs. Kerr after 10:40am.  I am unable to discuss topics with you uninterrupted this way, and make sure I cover everything when I still have students in the classroom.  With a scheduled meeting I can pull all needed resources to share with you as well.  I am available after school most days to have such a meeting.  I prefer to have open lines of communication with families as this benefits the child best.  You can email me at [email protected], come by, or call at 541-469-7417, x. 209 to make an appointment.

                                                                     Birthday Celebrations!
We have three birthdays to celebrate in October!  If you wish to bring/send a special treat for your child’s birthday we will be happy to celebrate during lunch.  Please bring/send this special treat before 10:30 to make it in time.

                                                                         Sight Words

Each week I will add the sight words we learned this week to this list.  Please review these with your child, it may take a little while for them to get the hang of it before we know all of our letters and sounds, but many times they start to memorize these words right away.

Week 1: the

Week 2: a, an, is, here

Week 3: see, I

Week 4: and, we

Week 5: he, she

Week 6: have, big, small

Week 7: this, it, no

Coming soon…

Next week we will study shapes and bats.  Halloween is on Thursday, and we will have our parade and party that afternoon starting at 11:20ish after recess.  Friday, Nov. 1st there is no school as teachers are getting our new "report cards" ready for conferences.

Costumes

Please do not send your child to school in their costume on Halloween, we will change into them after lunch.  Otherwise students are too distracted to learn much.
Halloween party goodies:           We would like to enjoy some snacks along with some fun and games at our Halloween Party.  We would like to have the following sort of snacks: popcorn, juice, fruit, crackers, and of course, some sweets.  We already have two families donating cupcakes,  1 bottle of juice, and 1 bag of candy.  If you can send in something else listed above that

Today is the first day of registration which means it's almost time for another school year! We will see you in about 3 weeks for the 2013-2014 School Year!
Another great year in the Owl Class!

What we've done this week....

This week we have been reading the decodable book, "The Quilt", practicing the "qu" sound. Please have your child read this book to you. That is all the sight words we will have this year. We have been studying the Native American culture this week, including making and eating Indian Fry Bread, making music with Indian drumming, making our own regalia (beaded necklaces), making and wearing patterned headbands, making and using shakers along with the drumming and even reading a tipi in our classroom! Thanks to all the gals in the Indian Education program for an awesome week of education and fun! Quite a few of our students were a part of the Indian Education Program this year, enjoying one-on-one time with an Indian Educator, enhancing their experiences of kindergarten. If your child has any Indian heritage they too can benefit from this program....ask us about it for next year!

Great trip to the movies!

What a perfect day to walk downtown, enjoy popcorn & soda (what a treat!) for breakfast, and watch a fun movie for all to enjoy! Thanks, once again, to a great group of parents who walked with us keeping us safe on our trek, it's so helpful having a few extra hands and eyes! And thanks to Redwood Theater for having us, please give them your appreciation the next time you are there!

Last day change:

Plans for the last day BBQ have fallen through, BUT, no worries, we are still going to go to Kid Town to play and eat lunch. The only difference is that we will bring a sack lunch instead. Please make sure your child has returned their permission slip asap!

This week we have been reading the decodable book, "A Ramp", practicing the "V" sound. Please have your child read this book to you. The new sight words this week were her, him and time. That is all the sight words we will have this year! I have started assessing students this week, and I am so proud of the progress they have made, EXCELLENT job Owls! I will continue to assess next week to be ready for report cards. We completed our Dibels test last week which consists of reading letter sounds, nonsense words and sounding out words. Our students did very well overall, and you will get these scores along with report cards. We have been studying the ocean, the beach, and tide pools all week, and have been making an ocean creature book which includes art and writing. Watch for this to come home and ask your child to read it to you.

Thank you family memebers!

I just want to say thanks to all the family members who chaperoned on our Harris Beach Field Trip Tuesday, it was a huge success, and the kids learned a lot. We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful place to learn about science right here in our backyard! Thanks again, you made this field trip possible!

Movie Field Trip

Blue permission slips went home on Wednesday. We will be walking to the movie theater, then watching Monsters Inc. We thought this would be a good choice with part 2 coming out at the end of June! We will be leaving school at 8:20 (though I accidentally put 8:30 on permissions slip).

Kady & Jacob have both written to 1000 and earned an item of their choice from the vending machine! Great job!

Last-Day-Of-School-BBQ

A parent in the Elephant class will be barbequing for all of Kindergarten on the last day of school. We will walk to Kid Town where we will play and eat to enjoy ourlast day of Kindergarten! A permission slip will be coming home soon. You are welcome to join us in this celebration as well. When the permission slip comes home please let us know if you will be joining us so we can get an accurate head count for food. It should be great fun!

Please remember to help your child practice the sight word list that was sent home. This week has been all about camping, writing an acrostic poem called "CAMP" on our sleeping bags we made, and writing what we saw when we went hiking with more details on our hiking boots craft, and even having a tent in the classroom to read in when work was completed! Our fake campfire even kept us cozy!

Harris Beach Field Trip Tuesday

Please remember, Monday there is no school because it is Memorial Day, and first thing when we return on Tuesday we are going on our field trip to Harris Beach! As this may seem like poor planning, we had to work around the low tide schedule to be able to get into the tide pools. Please remember to dress your child in warm layers, including a jacket, tennis shoes, and NO SANDALS please, we want them to be safe.
Parents who volunteered, please make sure you have us on your calendar as we need your help for this event. I have sent additional reminders to the parents who signed up. We will be needing you to be with your child and one other child, chaperoning and keeping them safe. We will be participating in some beach specific activities while we are there. Unfortunately, since we are asking you to care for another child during this time, we cannot allow younger siblings to attend. We are sorry for any hardship this may cause.

 Nice Performance

Thank you to all of the families who came to our Piggy Opera, it was a wonderful event, and our classroom was overflowing with loved ones, and special treats made by Mrs. Kerr. Our receptions would not have been nearly as nice without Mrs. Kerr's preparation and special touch, thank you Mrs. Kerr, (: The students loved seeing their parents in the audience watching them sing. It was so fun, and just adorable to watch!
